Renaissance Health Clinic
"At the Renaissance Clinic, patients have a medical home which can appropriately handle over 90 percent of their health care needs."
David Filipi, MD, Medical Director of Hope Medical Outreach Coalition
The situation in our community
Census data reveals that in Douglas County, 12 percent of residents live below the poverty level, and 15 percent of residents — nearly 75,000 people — do not have health insurance. In the heart of the city, the number living below the poverty level approaches 30 percent. Without an accessible, affordable health provider, many residents will ignore conditions until they become chronic or critical, finally resorting to the emergency rooms for treatment.
Our strategy to create better health
By partnering with the Salvation Army, we can bring health care to the most underserved populations of the city. If these patients have access to education, screening and health care, health conditions will not escalate and can be treated more economically and with more success.
How are we doing this?
Co-located with the Salvation Army Lied Renaissance Center, we provide low or no-cost screening, diagnosis and health care to the residents of the center and surrounding area. The center houses up to 200 people living on its campus. Staffed Monday through Friday, the clinic sees patients with a staff of four mid-level providers. Also supporting the efforts are an internist and a medical director.
What impact are we having on the health of our community?
More than 2,600 patient visits from Omaha-area teens and adults were logged in 2010. The center treated a variety of medical, emotional, social and economic issues.
